Garrya thurettii - Silk Tassle

This evergreen shrub is the perfect addition to any garden given a touch of elegance and much needed winter interest. This distinguished plant is celebrated for its striking, long, silvery catkins that gracefully adorn its branches in winter and early spring giving you much needed colour in the quieter months. The dark-green, glossy leaves give a perfect backdrop for these catkins and remain all year round. Garrya thuretti has an estimated height and spread of around 6 metres so is perfect at the back of a mixed border or as a specimen plant. Its architectural form and the unique texture of its tassels complement a wide range of plants, especially when paired with early spring bulbs or evergreen ferns for contrasting foliage. 

Place this in full sun or partial shade to see the best growth. It prefers to grow in well-drained soil and can tolerate slightly dry areas. It is fully hardy so can be established in exposed or sheltered gardens.
