This is a beautiful small to medium-sized tree that is noted for both its bark and flowers. Its graceful spreading branches to over four metres but will take decades to get there, so it can be treated like a small tree when planted. It will reach a height of more than 8m and is deciduous by nature. In spring, waxy-looking ovate leaves with a pointed apex emerge and cloak the crown; as the season moves to summer, bell-shaped white flowers with a yellow centre appear in clusters and perfume the air with a sweet summer scent. The bark of the trunk is a smooth grey when young, and as the tree matures, it becomes orange-brown and forms attractive fissures. This Styrax has an eye-catching autumnal display, with the leaves turning a stunning brilliant yellow as the summer finishes.
Styrax thrives best in sheltered spots away from cold winds. It will grow at its best in a South, West, or east-facing setting and is tolerant of a wide range of soils except chalk. This tree is happy in both full sun and partial shade. When planting, add plenty of organic matter. Repeat this treatment by adding mulch every spring. Water thoroughly the tree during the first year to ensure its root system is established. Styrax is great planted in a mixed tree and shrub border. In small gardens, use it as a centrepiece with underplanting in a feature pot.
Supplied at an approx. height of 250-300cm in a 10 litre container.
