Quercus rubra, commonly known as American Red Oak, is a striking deciduous tree prized for its vibrant autumn foliage and robust growth. Ideal for bare root hedging, this species establishes well and develops a dense, upright structure. The large, lobed leaves emerge green in spring and summer before turning brilliant shades of red and bronze in the autumn, creating a stunning seasonal display. Its strong, spreading branches and sturdy trunk make it perfect for forming tall, attractive hedgerows.

Thriving in a wide range of soils, including sandy and loamy types, American Red Oak prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. Plant in well-drained soil, and water regularly during the establishment period. Minimal maintenance is needed – prune in late winter to shape and maintain density. Pair with contrasting hedging plants like Beech or Acer for a dynamic, colourful boundary.

Supplied as a pack of 24 bare root plants at a height of 80-100cm
