PRE-ORDER: Prunus Spinosa - Blackthorn - Bare Root Hedging 60-80cm - Pack of 12
Availability: In stock
Add some rugged beauty with our pack of 12 bare root hedging plants of the Prunus spinosa, or Blackthorn, for your garden; each is robustly sized at 60-80cm. Blackthorn is noted as an excellent ornamental plant with pure white early spring blossoms before the leaves, which produce beautiful contrasts against the bare branches. In the fall, it bears the dark-blue-to-black fruit called sloes, used for making the traditional sloe gin liqueur and an important food source for animals.
Â
The blackthorn can be grown in almost any kind of soil type or condition and is ideal for plants in wildlife hedges and rural boundaries. Its dense, spiny branches give excellent security and nesting birds for added biodiversity value. The Blackthorn, however, to succeed in the location of planting, well-drained soil and excellent watering during the first season of growth will set roots deeply, solidly, and healthily. Otherwise, it's tough and demands little care once it's established, apart from pruning in late winter if needed to maintain shape and encourage thicker growth.
