One of the most popular magnolias, soulangeana is a reliable and versatile small tree or shrub. Large dark green leaves appear in mid spring, at about the same time as the huge, deep rose pink or white goblet shaped flowers. This deciduous shrub will give your garden wonderful spring colour and fragrance with its sweet blooms flowering from April to May. This is a good magnolia for small gardens, as it remains a shapely shrub for many years, and even when it is mature, is a manageable small tree. Delivered as a standard this stunning ornamental tree will look great in container planting on a patio or terrace but is just as effective in a border adding structure and colour.
Soulangeana is more wind tolerant than other Magnolia varieties but should still be sheltered from cold winter temperatures and frosts. Growing best in full sun and partial shade make sure you place this in a bright spot with moist but well drained soil.
