Cotinus Royal Purple - Smoke Bush - Amazing Autumn Colour Shrub

Cotinus 'Royal Purple' is a striking deciduous shrub known for its rich, deep purple foliage that adds dramatic colour to the garden throughout the season. In summer, it produces airy clusters of smoky, pinkish-purple flower plumes, creating a hazy, cloud-like effect that gives the plant its common name—Smoke Bush. As autumn arrives, the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange, offering a stunning seasonal transformation.

This hardy and low-maintenance shrub thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and full sun to partial shade. It grows to around 3-4 metres in height and spread, forming a bushy, upright shrub. For the best foliage colour, plant in a sunny location. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact form and encourage vigorous new growth. Combine with Hydrangea paniculata or Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Rocket' for a striking contrast of colour and texture.
