For gardeners who want the rich, fragrant flavour of classic Cox's apples without the need for a pollination partner, the Cox's Self Fertile Apple Tree is an excellent option. This type produces medium-sized, red-flushed fruits that are very sweet and somewhat acidic. They are ideal for eating fresh, juicing, or adding flavour to salads and desserts. The tree's lovely white-pink blossoms in the spring bring bees and other beneficial insects to your garden, and the apples will be ready to be picked from late September to October.
Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. This self-fertile variety does not require another apple tree to produce fruit, making it ideal for smaller gardens or standalone planting. Prune annually in winter to maintain shape and encourage healthy fruiting.
Supplied as strong bare root trees at a height of around 150cm, grafted on a MM106 rootstock, this produces a tree of moderate vigour suitable for most situations where fruit is of a nice pickable height. Trees are easily maintained at a manageable size and never reach more than around 12ft tall.
